THE 4 Cs
How Diamonds Are Evaluated
The 4 Cs are the four key characteristics used to evaluate a diamond’s quality and value: Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat Weight. These factors help determine how beautiful, rare, and valuable a diamond is. Understanding the 4 Cs makes it easier to compare diamonds and choose one that best fits your style and budget.

CUT
Cut is all about how well a diamond sparkles. It describes how the diamond’s surfaces, called facets, are shaped and angled to reflect light. A well-cut diamond shines brightly and catches your eye from across the room, while a poorly cut diamond can look dull and lifeless. Cut grades range from Excellent to Poor, and even a smaller diamond can outshine a bigger one if the cut is better. Want to see how sparkle is measured? Check out this diamond cut grading scale.

CLARITY
Clarity is about how clean a diamond is on the inside and outside. Most diamonds have tiny natural marks called inclusions or blemishes, formed deep within the Earth. These marks are often too small to see without magnification. The fewer imperfections a diamond has, the more rare and valuable it is. Curious about the different clarity levels? COLOR
Color refers to how clear or colorless a diamond looks. The most valuable diamonds are completely colorless, allowing light to pass through easily and create maximum sparkle. Diamonds are graded from D (colorless) to Z (noticeable color tint). Many diamonds look colorless to the naked eye, even if they have slight color differences. These subtle variations can affect both the diamond’s appearance and price.

CARAT
Carat weight measures how heavy a diamond is, which usually relates to how big it looks. One carat equals 200 milligrams. Bigger diamonds are more rare, which makes them more expensive, but bigger doesn’t always mean better sparkle. A smaller diamond with great cut, color, and clarity can look more beautiful than a larger one with lower quality. Celebrity Spotlight: The Power of Carat Weight
When Jeff Bezos proposed to Lauren Sánchez, her engagement ring quickly became one of the most talked-about diamonds of the year. The ring features a rare pink diamond estimated at around 30 carats, making it far larger than most engagement rings and worth millions of dollars. This massive diamond is a perfect example of how carat weight affects both size and rarity. Larger diamonds are much harder to find in nature, which makes them more valuable and more attention-grabbing. Even from across a room, high-carat diamonds like this stand out because of their impressive size and brilliance.
